Why Claude's Connector Ecosystem Matters More Than Its Model

Everyone debates which AI model is smarter. Almost nobody talks about which one can actually do things in your world. That's the wrong conversation.

What I Got Wrong

For the past year, I've been obsessed with model capabilities. Which model writes better code? Which one reasons more accurately? Which one handles longer contexts?

Then I noticed something: I stopped switching between Claude and ChatGPT. Not because Claude's model got dramatically better (though it did). Because Claude was connected to my Gmail, my Google Calendar, my Notion, my GitHub. ChatGPT wasn't.

The switching cost wasn't intelligence. It was integration.

The Connector Landscape Right Now

As of March 2026, Claude has over 38 native connectors available through Cowork and the plugin marketplace. Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Slack, Microsoft 365, Figma — the tools most knowledge workers actually use every day.

But the connectors themselves aren't the story. The story is what happens when you combine them.

A single connector is a convenience. "Summarize this email" is nice but not transformative. Three connectors working together — "Check my calendar, find the prep doc in Google Drive, and email the summary to the attendees" — that's a workflow that used to require three app switches and ten minutes. Claude does it in one prompt.

Why This Matters for the AI Industry

Here's the uncomfortable truth for AI companies: models are becoming commodities. The gap between the top five models shrinks every quarter. But connector ecosystems are sticky.

Once someone has Claude connected to their Gmail, Calendar, and Notion, they're not switching to a competitor for a 5% improvement on a coding benchmark. They'd have to reconnect everything, rebuild their Skills, lose their memory context. The friction is enormous.

This is exactly what happened with smartphones. By 2012, the raw hardware differences between iPhone and Android were minimal. What kept people loyal was their app ecosystem, their purchased content, their muscle memory. The connectors, not the compute.

What This Means for Products Like OctoDock

I build OctoDock, which connects AI agents to apps through a single MCP URL. You'd think Claude's growing connector ecosystem would threaten us directly. In some ways it does.

But here's what I've observed: Claude's native connectors are good for simple, single-app operations. "Search my Gmail." "Create a Notion page." Where they get thin is cross-app workflows with context persistence — operations that need to remember what happened three steps ago and use that context in the next step.

That's where the MCP layer — the protocol that powers both Claude's connectors and OctoDock — becomes interesting. The protocol is open. The intelligence layer on top of it is where the real differentiation happens.

The Prediction

Within 18 months, no one will choose an AI assistant based on benchmark scores. They'll choose based on:

  1. Which apps does it connect to?
  2. How well does it handle multi-step workflows across those apps?
  3. Does it remember my preferences and patterns?

The model is the engine. The connectors are the wheels. You need both, but the wheels are what actually touch the road.
