How to Use Claude Memory So You Never Repeat Yourself Again

How to Use Claude Memory So You Never Repeat Yourself Again

I used to start every conversation with "I'm building a SaaS product, I prefer direct answers, and please use Traditional Chinese." Now Claude just knows.

Key Takeaways

What Memory Actually Does

Think of it like this: imagine you have a new coworker who takes notes about you after every meeting. Next time you talk, they already know your role, your preferences, and what you're working on.

That's Claude Memory. After each conversation, Claude extracts key context: what you work on, how you like answers formatted, which projects are active, what tools you use. Next conversation, it already has that background.

The important distinction: Memory is not a recording of your conversations. It's a summary of useful context Claude derived from them.

What You Should Do Right Now

Go to Settings > Memory and look at what Claude has already saved about you. You might be surprised.

You can copy this prompt to get started:

Show me everything you currently remember about me.

Claude will list what it knows. From there, you can correct anything wrong, add missing context, or delete things you don't want it to remember.

Three Things Most People Miss

💡 Memory updates happen in the background, not in real time. If you just told Claude you changed jobs, the next chat might not reflect it yet. Give it a conversation or two.

💡 Deleting a conversation eventually removes its memory. If you delete a chat, the context Claude derived from it gets cleaned up too. This happens nightly, not instantly.

💡 You can import memory from other AI tools. Anthropic added a memory import feature in 2026 so you don't start from scratch if you're switching from ChatGPT or another tool.

What Memory Can't Do

❌ Memory doesn't work inside Incognito chats. If you need a clean slate, use Incognito.

❌ Memory doesn't make Claude perfectly consistent. It's a summary, not a database. Claude might still forget details or mix things up.

❌ Memory doesn't sync between different Claude products in the way you'd expect. Your claude.ai memory, Claude Code memory, and Cowork context are related but separate systems.

How to Set It Up

  1. Log in to claude.ai or open the Claude app
  2. Go to Settings > Capabilities
  3. Make sure Memory is turned on
  4. Start chatting normally — Claude will build memory automatically
  5. After a few conversations, go to Settings > Memory to review what it learned
  6. Edit or delete anything that's wrong

That's it. No configuration needed. The best thing you can do is check your memory settings once a week and keep them accurate.
